Manuel Scherer

. Hello Düsseldorf, Germany!!! I signed a contract with Mitsui & Co. Deutschland GmbH, a globally acting trading and investment company headquartered in Tokio. I am excited to start my activities as a product manager in the Plastics and Inorganic Chemicals Business Unit on 1.12.2006.

. Since this website was brought to life by young professionals and academics who are passionate about and have a strong connection with eastern Europe, I would like to give all of you who haven't been to Poland a taste of life there. Most of my experiences contradict many of the typical prejudices associated with this country. Others, as you will read in the following, provide a quite accurate picture of reality - as I subjectively experienced it.

. It is almost impossible to sum up 8 months, amongst others a Christmas feast in Wloclawek and a marriage on the country side, in a couple of words. But if I were asked to briefly characterise my stay in Cracow, then the following items would for sure appear on my list: lingering memories of the K&K Empire, jewish traces, road holes, suffered car break ins, a lot of great food, and life-changing friendships.

. Cracow is full of surprises, each corner harbors a potential treasure. All you need is a healthy portion of will to explore, and a wonderful world of underground labyrinths will be yours, which accommodates concerts of diverse music styles or offers the venue for a broad spectrum of polish culinary indulgences. Obwarzanki (obwarzanek is the polish counterpart to the American bagel) booths decorate the cityscape as much as babcias (grandmothers) selling smoked oscypki (the production of this cheese in Poland was subject of intense controversy between Poland and the EU), which altogether generates a feeling of cosiness and chaotic order that I have not experienced anywhere else I have been to.

. Many people don't know Poland and the east. I found life there intriguing and fascinating, with all its positive and negative aspects. Now, please allow me to turn to the second idea of this consortium: the presentation of self in light of past and present.
